PressureQC: Embedding Greater Control of the Packaging Process

MMAAZZ's PressureQC features embedded FlexiForce sensors to help minimize losses in product manufacturing.

Background

In high-throughput processing – such as in bottling and food packaging industries – there are several twists, turns and other impacts a product encounters on its way to completion. Quality control personnel take precautions to make sure their systems are running as smoothly as possible, but there are certain damage risks in the packaging process that simply cannot be observed by the naked eye.

Challenge

Minimizing damage and loss during product packaging processes is a major challenge for product managers and engineers. As a result, MMAAZZ – a Masitek division – began developing a solution to measure how much force a product endures in the packaging process. The product would have to be able to capture and relay this information wirelessly as it went through production.

Solution

MMAAZZ partnered with Tekscan to develop the PressureQC: A force sensing solution that could coordinate with their electronics to effectively determine forces applied to bottles and cans by line rails, robotic grippers and adjacent product units during production. Custom FlexiForce™ sensors were embedded into a model of a product that could be sent through the manufacturing process to monitor and relay force data. The sensors’ output would allow the operator to pinpoint the locations of high and low forces in their packaging line, and in turn respond with the appropriate corrective action. This information could help manufacturers significantly minimize losses due to damaged goods and improve the efficiency of their operation.
