Clinician Spotlight: Ben Sutter

Dr. Ben Sutter

Dr. Ben Sutter, DMD, FAGD, FICCMO, LVIF, owns a dental practice in Eugene, OR that focuses on cosmetic, prosthetic, and TMD for patient treatments. He recently took the time to tell us about how T-Scan™ impacted his dental practice.

How are you using T-Scan™?

My practice is highly focused on Cosmetics, Reconstruction, and TMD. Those are co-mingled more than some of us might want to believe.  T-Scan technology is critical to making sure the bite is where I want it. In my area, I am getting known as the "bite guy", because I routinely use the technology to take care of balance of force and bite timing issues.

What value does it bring to your dental practice?

Savings of time is huge, because it cuts down on post-op visits, especially on long-span bridges, veneers, full mouth rehabilitations, dentures, and implants.  It helps eliminate porcelain fracturing on those pesky second molars.  I am one of the few Disclusion Time Reduction (DTR)-Certified Clinicians.  You cannot complete DTR without using the accuracy of T-Scan to measure occlusion.  Patients appreciate the technology and it is easy for them to understand and take ownership of their disease process.

Using T-Scan technology to diagnose occlusal issues instead of relying on occlusal paper is synonymous to using a 3D cone beam when placing an implant, instead of a traditional panoramic film.  Once you can see all of the things you have been missing, you won't practice without it.

What's the return on investment?

This is immeasurable. Last year DTR alone brought over $88,000 into my practice and there is no lab fee associated with that. But it is bigger than that. Patient loyalty is huge when you can see (and diagnose) things other doctors can’t, because they do not employ the technology. Not to mention patients are demanding more from their health care providers. They are doing their research and I have gained patients by just having the technology. Occlusal disease is not treated on the same level as decay and periodontal disease. I think on some level it is due to mixed results and trying to interpret blue dots from occlusal film, which reveals nothing about force applied to the teeth. T-Scan offers the ability to accurately and repeatedly treat bite issues.
