Choosing a Wheelchair Seating Pressure System
Clinical professionals such as ATPs (Assistive Technology Professionals) need to support their patients and clients with pressure data, and in compliance with IPM (interface pressure mapping) best practices.
Tekscan provides several seating, positioning and cushioning solutions for clinical and research professionals to pinpoint pressure imbalances.
Pressure offloading seating needs include:
- Validate cushion selection and adjustments
- Identify pressure on high-risk areas
- Evaluate areas of patient discomfort
- Monitor the progression and treatment of wound ulceration Pre- and post-surgical evaluations
- Aid in identification of unseen asymmetries and pelvic obliquities
- Screen for and monitor treatment of pressure sores, ulcers, and wounds

Frequently Asked Questions About Wheelchair Pressure Mapping Solutions
What resolution do I need?
For quick clinical assessments and seating cushion adjustments, we recommend the ErGO-Scan system. Developed with wheelchair seating manufacturer support, we determined that this resolution would effectively meet the analysis needs of ATPs, giving them all the data needed for cushion selection and seating adjustments. Our standard model 7300 sensor has 324 sensing points across an 18x18" sensor (1 sensel per in2).
This data is consistent with clinical IPM (Interface Pressure Mapping) best practices.
If you have a seating application that requires higher resolution, the CONFORMat system is compatible with sensors with over 2000 sensing points (3 sensels per in2 / 0.5 sensel per cm2).
Do I need a dedicated tablet to use the ErGO-Scan software?
No, the software runs on your clinical PC and connects to the system over Wi-Fi, making it simple to integrate into your patient workflow. There is no need for the additional cost of a vendor required tablet.
How can I share video of the pressure mapping data?
The pressure mapping data video can be shared as an MP4 file. You don't need the clinical software to view the results and be able to visualize the pressure changes.
This can be helpful for patient understanding of the seating pressure changes, and they can see it right on their phone.
Does the patient notice the sensor when testing different cushions or seating configurations?
No, the sensor is designed for the electronics to be minimally invasive to patient. The hardware can be hung off the back of a wheelchair to limit patient interference, and the sensor pad itself is thin and unobtrusive when in use.
How do you address hammocking?
The ErGO-Scan 7300 is a newly designed conformable, fabric sensor.
The sensors for the CONFORmat system can move independently of each other in 3 dimensions to capture the highest detail level without hammocking.
How long with the ErGO-Scan Sensor last? Does it need to be replaced?
The sensor is designed with durability in mind to last the life of the product. The sensor tab is reinforced to prevent trace breakage issues at the electronics-sensor connection. And the advanced sensor trace design prevents trace breakage-related failures at the sensing area.
Why Choose ErGO-Scan?
ErGO-Scan is designed for clinical workflow efficiency rather than high-resolution analytical measurement. For most day-to-day seating assessment applications, the system provides the pressure visualization clinicians need while offering meaningful advantages in portability, wireless operation, and ease of information sharing.
It is a streamlined pressure mapping system designed for fast, simple clinical seating assessments and cushion comparisons. Prioritizes clinical workflow efficiency, portability, and ease of use over high-resolution analytical measurement
Why Choose CONFORMat?
CONFORMat is designed for more complex seating analysis with different seating sizes and configurations, or more than one surface - seat and chair back. Researchers or seating design engineers may need high resolution or detailed analysis.
It is a high-resolution pressure mapping system designed for detailed seating pressure measurement, analysis, and reporting in clinical and research applications.
Is ErGO-Scan an Alternative to BodiTrak?
ErGO-Scan is a pressure mapping solution designed for wheelchair seating assessments and clinical mobility evaluations. ErGO-Scan is designed to support simple, workflow-friendly clinical seating assessments. Clinicians familiar with the now-discontinued BodiTrak system may find ErGO-Scan to be a practical option for evaluating pressure distribution, comparing cushions, and supporting seating decisions with objective data.
