MobileMat BESS

A computerized implementation of the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS)

A computerized implementation of the Balance Error Scoring System (BESS).

What is the MobileMat BESS?

The MobileMat BESS is the first and only computerized system that objectively implements the well-established Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) used to assess the static postural stability of athletes pre- and post-concussion.  The system combines Tekscan’s proven pressure sensing platform with innovative software to count the balance errors committed by the subject during the administration of either the standard or the modified BESS tests.  The software, which has been validated by researchers at the University of Delaware, ensures that each test score is determined objectively, consistently and reliably.  This eliminates the inter- and intra-rater reliability problems that arise when manually scoring the BESS test.

Why Computerized Testing?

With the MobileMat BESS you can be assured that your athletes are always tested in the same way and to the same balance error criteria, regardless of your tester‘s training and experience levels. This gives you the peace of mind and confidence that you can meaningfully compare and trend your athletes’ BESS scores to their baselines, even over multiple seasons.

  • Performs objective, consistent and reliable balance error scoring independent of the tester’s training and experience
  • Intuitive, easy-to-use software
  • Streamlines the BESS testing process
  • No clinical expertise or special training is required to operate the MobileMat BESS
  • Generates scorecards and reports at the push of a button
  • Validated by researchers at the University of Delaware

The MobileMat BESS combines Tekscan’s proven pressure sensing platform with innovative software that uses proprietary algorithms correlated to the balance errors committed by the subject during the administration of either the standard or the modified BESS tests to score the subject.

The MobileMat BESS system consists of MobileMat BESS software and a Tekscan pressure sensing portable mat which connects to the computer via a USB connection.

The BESS software features an intuitive, easy-to-use interface that:

  • Guides the tester through each of the six trials of the standard BESS test

  • Automatically detects errors and assigns a score for each trial

  • Allows testers to easily randomize the sequences of trial as their protocols may require

  • Saves test results in a centralized database

  • Requires no clinical expertise or special training to operate the MobileMat BESS

  • Displays periods of instability on a timeline
