One Year Later: Tekscan's High-Speed TireScan™ System Transforms Tire Testing

Norwood, MA. March 28, 2024

One year ago, Tekscan, in partnership with Calspan, unveiled the High-Speed TireScan™ system, a breakthrough in tire testing technology. Today, we are proud to report successful industry adoption and compelling feedback from tire manufacturers and testing facilities.

Since its launch, the High-Speed TireScan™ system has broken new ground in dynamic contact patch pressure (DCPP) measurements, providing accurate, repeatable, and efficient analyses at speeds up to 165 mph (265 km/h). This new technology has overcome traditional tire testing limitations, offering previously unattainable insights into real-world conditions.

Transformative Results and Industry Impact

Calspan, an early adopter of the system, has reported notable outcomes. Henning Olsson, Sr. Director, Technology at Calspan, notes:

“Over the past year, the High-Speed TireScan system has continued to provide new insights into a range of different tire phenomena. From high speed testing of motorsports tires, to detailed analysis of passenger car tires, up to high load testing of large semi-truck tires, the results have all been very valuable. We know that because people keep coming back for more data after their initial test results.”

The tire industry is gaining significant new insights thanks to the High-Speed TireScan™ system. It is now possible to:

  • Characterize contact patch behavior under high speeds and slips with unprecedented precision.
  • Gain valuable insights into tire wear patterns, optimizing design for longevity.
  • Enhance contact patch modeling, leading to more accurate simulations and predictions.
  • Evaluate and improve rolling resistance for better fuel efficiency.
  • Refine Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models, ensuring closer alignment with real-world behavior.
  • Make informed tire selections for vehicle design, enhancing safety and performance.

Looking Ahead

"The positive feedback from Calspan and other industry leaders reaffirms our belief that the High-Speed TireScan™ system's will revolutionize tire testing," comments Camilo Aladro, Product Marketing Director at Tekscan. "Our commitment to innovation remains unwavering, and we are excited about the future contributions our technology will make to the tire industry."
