Force Sensitive Video Game Brake

Force Sensitive Video Game Brake Pedals

FlexiForce sensors are part of a modification assembly integrated into a standard video game pedal to make braking experience more life-like for the user.

Force Sensor for More Realistic Video Game Braking

Background: Most brake pedals for video racing games contain potentiometers to modulate the brakes.  This means that the brake pedal must travel a certain distance to register a change in braking level.  Real-life race cars have a different braking mechanism, where the harder the brake is pressed, the more braking force is achieved. As AP Electrix explains, potentiometers are "great for the throttle and clutch, but when it comes to braking they are unrealistic." A game pedal that offers mechanical resistance similar to that in an actual racing vehicle enhances the overall user experience.

Challenge: To develop a modification assembly that allows the pedal to react more realistically, it was necessary to select a force sensor that was small enough and inexpensive enough to replace the potentiometers typically used to modulate the brakes in a video game controller.

Solution: AP Electrix designed a modification which integrated FlexiForce™ force sensors with a mechanical actuator in a standard video game pedal assembly.  Load sensors measure the force applied to the pedal rather than the distance the pedal travels. This is a better simulation for racing scenarios because it allows the user to press harder on the pedal to achieve more braking force. The solution designed by AP Electrix is simple to install and does not require any soldering by the user.  FlexiForce was selected due to its thinness (0.2mm), low cost, and repeatability, which is ±2.5%.
