The ELF software starts without an error message, but the ELF handle is not recognized and the New recording button is inactive.
Question/Problem: The ELF software starts without an error message, but the ELF handle is not recognized and the New recording button is inactive.
Answer/Solution: This may happen with a single handle ELF system if the software detects another device on a COM port which is lower than the COM port assigned to the ELF handle. The software is designed to recognize only one USB ELF handle, so if another device is located it will stop looking at the higher COM ports.
On some computers, the single handle ELF software may recognize another device on the computer at a different COM port than the ELF handle and this will prevent the software from recognizing the handle. To determine if this is the case, click the Configure Wireless COM button in the toolbar.
In the resulting dialog window, determine if the software has recognized a COM port device. (COM3 in this case.)
Check to see if this is a different COM port than the one that was assigned to the ELF handle. Open the Windows Device Manager by right-clicking on the “My Computer” icon on the desktop. In the system properties dialog, click the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager button. Expand Ports (COM & LPT) and determine the COM port of the ELF USB Handle.
(COM6 here.) If the ELF handle is not present or if it displays a ! or ? symbol, consult the manual for instructions on installing the ELF handle drivers.
If this is different than the COM port recognized by the ELF software, the ELF handle must be reassigned to a lower COM port. Right-click on the ELF USB Handle in the Device Manager and click Properties. In the handle Properties dialog, click the “Advanced” button under the Port Settings tab. In the Advanced Settings dialog, change the COM port number for the handle to the same COM number that was recognized by the ELF software. In this case, change COM6 to COM3.
The ELF software should now recognize the ELF handle. This procedure may need to be performed again if the handle is moved to another USB port.
